Good episode, but I can't help thinking it gets overshadowed by the second Star Trek movie and becomes "the one they got Khan from"... |

One of my favourite episodes, this one... Lazarus' fate at the end is rather chilling! |

well we come to someones favourite this week!
28 The City on the Edge of Forever
This Weeks episode is ’ The City on the Edge of Forever’
I remember this one very well and after last seeing it maybe(maybe not?) about 30 years ago I still remembered that Spock was going to cover up his ears. It has a lot in it and has one of the most dramatic scenes I’ve seen in this first series.
Edith Keller’s preaching in the mission about how to be good is a bit dated now, but considered as a view of attitudes in the thirties and it might be accurate and have been alright I suppose. In scenes like this however, where Spock or Kirk could have commented on the dated attitudes in the mission in the 1930’s perhaps, I think the criticism (that I remember reading in another thread here somewhere), that the humans in Star Trek are often portrayed as either good because they have understood societies rules, or else they are bad - is a valid one. Wow, never meant that sentence to get that long!
Also thinking about Spock seeing an alternative possible future using the machine he builds, in which Edith Keller lives and the Enterprise never existed, I have come to the conclusion that the machine should only have been predicting the future. The alternative future doesn’t make that much sense to me however as Spock’s machine is looking at a recording of time he made back at the portal. I think this is an unfortunate plot weakness to what is such a good dramatic scene with Edith Keller at the end. Joan Collins is very natural in all the guest parts I have seen her in TV series in.
If that is all I can find to complain about it must have stood the test of time and remains a very enjoyable episode. _________________ Last Watched: Seek, Locate and Destroy 30th Sep 2020 |
