Succeed than it was for a US one? Smaller budgets, only 3 channels way back when. Seems like tougher odds.

I think the success of new Doctor Who proves that isn't the case. That may have ben true in the 70s/80s, but I don't think it is now.

Both 'Doctor Who' and - to a larger extent - 'Torchwood' have become surprise hits with American audiences. 'Torchwood' even had billboards advertising it's launch on TV in LA back when season 1 was first broadcast there!

I meant more the 70's 80's. I should have been more time specific. & a British show doesn't have to break through to US audiences to be successful. But with less shelf space, ( i.e. less channels back then with BBC), it would seem longer odds.

It is pleasing that the new Dr Who has made it on this side of the pond & that these shows are having an easier time of it nowadays than one might expect or was the case in 70's 80's.
