I'd thought I'd start the guide right from the start. So lets start again. What did you think of the judgement machine? I thought it looked a bit cheap but an interesting design.

What did you expect on the, BBC budget of 50 per episode they got to work with?

I find THE WAY BACK as quite a boring episode.

Obviously it sets the story up very well, but as a child i found it lacked anything that made me watch SPACE FALL the following week.

If fact it was CYGNUS ALPHA when I really got into the show.

YOU weren't the only one, on that score "ORAC" - "SPACE FALL" hooked me - but, it did have, a certain gent in it, by the name of Avon

That certainly, made a BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

When I watch it now I can still see why i was bored, but I also understand why it had to be done that way to set everything up.

The episode certainly set a dark tone for the series, with Blake being framed for abusing children and the massacre in the tunnels. We also see just how nasty the Federation can be when altered the memories of children to make them think they'd been abused, a form of abuse in itself. Executing the good lawyer and his wife without a thought was also a bit of a shock at the time. It was moody, it was dark. It was a good start.

It is too bad the BBC had such a limited budget. Fortunately, this helped to focus them on good writing. Certain American shows have spectacular special effects and shoddy characters and writing.

I like Star Trek but even there the characters are often lacking in well a character. Sadly, The aliens on Star Trek (Worf the Klingon or Quark the Ferengi and don't forget the greatest of these Spock the Vulcan) often have more of a personality --in depth-- than the humans have.

Again, this is part of what makes an American like me love B7. Yes, young kids want to get right into the action. But, as they grow older, they may come to dislike shows where actions and imagery are strong but plot and theme are quite weak.

Blake's 7 is strong on plot and theme and for this reason I am not bothered by weaknesses in some of the special effects. Constrast this with "Andromeda" where special effects on the first episode are great but the set up was not as great.

The special effects in 'The Way Back' were far superior to most of the other episodes. The Judgement Machine was a bit kak, but most of those type of machines at the time (look at Dr Who) are quite unconvincing. I just thought the plot was amazing, and it was not what people were expecting - another bonus. It is definitely like a pilot, particularly as you only see some of the main characters at the end of the episode.

And I love the last moment of the story as Blake says "I'm coming back!" then we hear the fantastic theme tune crashing in. It is a perfect pilot and leads directly into a brilliant season.
