Sky1 has decided to drop plans to remake classic sci-fi drama Blake's 7.

Sky announced the adaptation, for which it had bought the rights from the BBC, in 2008 as part of an increased commitment to UK drama at the channel.

"Following the development process we have decided not to produce Blake's 7. However, Sky continues to invest heavily in original drama and it remains at the heart of our plans," said a spokeswoman for the broadcaster.

"We have just announced an extended run for the second series of Chris Ryan's Strike Back and we'll soon be unveiling a new long-running series for primetime."

Meanwhile, B4 productions said in a statement: "Sky deciding to not proceed with the planned TV revival of Blake's 7 is obviously disappointing, but the development process has resulted in the dynamic reinvention of this 'branded' series."

Blake's 7 was announced when former Sky1 controller Richard Woolfe was running the broadcaster. Stuart Murphy has since shifted his focus towards "warmer" scripted shows.

"Well now, none of us are going to faint with amazement at that. Are we"? When will B7e realise they just dont have what it takes, and never have

I'm really disappointed.

If Sky have pulled out there must be a reason. It seems that lots of 70s and 80s material is getting a reinvention. Blakes 7 has a strong brand image and if the current revival was dropped by Sky then questions about quality of product should be asked. The press release from B7 remains positive but I can't see anyone else picking it up after Sky has dropped it.

Good. It would have been an abortion anyway. Take at look at the reimagined Survivors and The Prisoner. The case for the prosecution rests.

I think we all gave up expecting this to happen quite a while back tbh!

There's absolutely no reason why a revived B7 couldn't work - the universe the series inhabbited warrants further exploration- but it needs to be be bold and surprising, taking the narrative in a different direction.

It's all a bit bizarre from where I'm sitting, the whole thing just seems to keep rolling and rolling without going anywhere - false momentum. According to B7 Productions' statement: http://www.blakes7.com/index.php/2010/08/sky1-drops-plans-for-blakes-7-remake/#top3, there are still production partners willing to fund 60% of the project (for some kind of pilot, presumably), so it could still survive if another broadcaster's interested, although the whole statement does sound like a bit of a begging letter to me.

And another funny thing - made me smile anyway - all the writers these guys go through... there was the improbably named Dominic Devine having a crack back in the old days when there was still going to be a revival with Paul Darrow, then the team of writers from 80s Doctor Who (Ben Aaronovitch et al) put to (what seems like) stalling projects, a supposed animated version, then these partly-successful reboot audio dramas... and it looks like Sky insisted on their own choice of writers: "Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle (Going Postal)", for a project they then backed out of. A cynical man might infer that B7 Productions go wherever the wind blows, desperately trying to ring some money out of a property they don't know what to do with.
