Yes, of course. Even the most reprehensible opinions have the right to be discussed. It is the only true way to understanding, even if it is a difficult road.

I voted no because there are times when it is not acceptable. What about someone who uses a platform to encourage racial violence for example? By granting that person their right to stand up and speak you can be effectively denying the freedom of someone else to walk down the street safely.

I voted yes as long as you don't offend anyone in the process!

But that's the problem. If the yes is conditional, which I believe it should be, then effectively it is no.

You can still have free speech and use it in a mannerly fashion,
that's what i believe, free speech doesn't mean rudness!

I do believe it WAS rudeness on another thread evolving into the
need for this thread as an excuse to push forth intolerance toward
others on this forum and get away with it!
Some are saying this forum has become a Zoo & the monkeys are
in need of moderators due to their impolite antics...
<Look at who created this thread if you have any doubts>
oh dear was that flaming?
According to BC and CB it isant flaming only free speech!
Too bad I can't debate this in Crewe with the birthday boy
shame to waste a good cake that way though

I'm just posting on this thread
because i've always believed on free speech
as long as it's not rude or offensive after all
we have free speech in America,
and people should be able to express their opinions
without going overboard, and Cats as to the thread you are referring to
i don't care to comment ,i don't know much
about it, i'm a peace loving person so i plead the 5th on that

Ideally yes....

but how do you distinguish between the people who really know how to use it and those who just want to abuse it?

I think the answer is... you can't... until it's too late... sometimes... so you have to always allow freedom of speech just in case... except when you decide someone really doesn't deserve it...

um.

What one has to consider, is the misnomer of the word 'free' in 'Free Speech'.

There is an interesting comparison between free speech and free citizens: Just as we in the West would like to call ourselves free, we are bound by laws and biological impedences that restrict our behaviour. Thus we are not 'free' in an absolute sense but, rather, free within certain tolerable limits. Since freedom in the absolute sense cannot exist (or it could be just to make us feel better about our lives), we are considered free citizens.

Free speech works in exactly the same way. You can say what you like, just don't cross the law. In most western countries, laws that restrict free speech have to do with incitement to violence against a group of people or placing people in some kind of danger. Thus Free speech is speech that is free within certain tolerable limits (the law).

Oh, and it should be maintained

I don't think any country has total free speech.Even here in the USA there are certain things and words you can't say without risk of fines, jail, or lawsuits.
