The beeb can only afford to shoot DW on council estates. Without the involvement of an American studio, how can you possibly hope to do any sci-fi justice, budgetary wise?

DW with the involvement of an American studio would be a disaster - didnt you see that McGann TV MOVIE?

I think it's hard to judge what a co-production would have been like on the basis of the movie, as it was a pilot and we never got to see what it would have been like had it gone to series. It'd be like trying to judge what 70's Who was like soley on Spearhead From Space.

I was`nt too keen on the proposed series -THE DOCTOR being half human was ludicrous and very STAR TREK - I think we were saved from a bit of a disaster really!

I was gutted that we didn't get to see more 8th Doctor adventures...but thanks to Big Finish we got to hear them instead!!

This is Fox Network we're talking about. They had Firefly in the palm of their hand and didn't know what to do with it.

Yeah I did, & it wasn't the money that screwed it up, it was what it was (or wasn't) spent on.

Okay, this is my take on the TV Movie and what's good about it and also where it went wrong.

The good - Paul, Sylvester, Daphne, Yee Jee. The fantastic TARDIS set - absolutley bloody beautiful in my view. The 7th Doctor saying 'Puccini'. The shoes scene. The kiss at the end, with the Doctor realising that he can't stay with Grace. The direction, especially the low shots crawling into the ambulance and the cuts between the Doctor and Master's re-birth's.
The central theme - the Doctor is life, the Master is death.

Where the TV Movie went wring in my view was to take a rather good idea about the new born Doctor being threatened the Master wanting to infect him and then cluttering it up with all the stuff about berylium clocks and midnight etc. It wasn't needed - they could have stuck with the notion of the Master as a predatory parasite jumping from one body to the next and focussed on the frightening possibilities of that. The snake scenes and the Master spewing on the guards are both nice and creepy, so a bit more of that would have been great. In fact the gloriously gothic TARDIS set would have been ideal for a 'cat and mouse' finale.

I still have a massive soft spot for the movie and although I'd be the first to admit its flawed, there are also many things I enjoyed about it.

The re-design of the Daleks Segal planned was certainly interesting but still not as good as the Ray Cussick original.
