One of the subjects that has come up on the PD - A Terrble Actor thread is the way in which acting techniques have changed since the 70's.

So to move the debate further - what aspects of the programme as a whole are a product of their era and which could be said to be timeless? Some critics have described the show as pure 70's, but how true is this? Season 4 has a more 80's feel, but does that mean that that too is inevitably dated, albeit to a different decade?

Is Blake's 7 as both a concept and a production absolutely a product of its time or are there ideas, designs or peformances which transcend their era? And if so, which?

The most obviously dated part of B7 is the clothing and hairstyles.

I dated it once, it wouldn't pay for it's half of the shared kebab.

We never saw each other again.

As the old saying goes 'Treat Blake's 7 like a tramp and a tramp like an episode of Bagpuss'

Oh no hang on, that's the codeine talking again...

Well the hairstyles and effects might be dated and to some extent the acting methods too, but the central concept of Good vs Evil and rebellious freedom fighters fighting an evil Totalitarian Administration are of course timeless.

Oh and forgot to mention the inspired design of the Liberator spacecraft itself: Wonderfully aesthetic and one of the greatest models featured in any tv series or film I would say.

One thing that shouldn't be dated but is, is the quality of some of the plotlines and the dialogue! It's dated by being more advanced than most of the stuff we see now!

Yes, the technoloy - ie: computers do look dated because they were guessing what things would be like in the far off future - same reason "U.F.O." looks dated.

Things like the Internet and, mobile phone/computers the size we have now weren't dreamed of back then!!!

They did reduce Orac to a shrinkydink in one epsode
and I had hopes they would continue to do that in future
episodes...
could have had many uses like tripping security systems

VERY DATED - theatrical acting , overtly middle class casting , dodgy costumes and poor special effects -prob makes B7 what it is though!

I was thinking about that while watching an episode of The Prisoner the other night... there's a little cut-scene where they show all the surveillance equipment going into operation... big tape reels spinning on computer banks, rows of flashing lights etc... it may look like old technology but it makes much better TV drama than it would if they'd just had a laptop with an LED busy light flashing on the hard drive...

Today's technology may be much more compact, but it looks boring!

It's like watching a 70's play on a tv set.

The "technology" got better from series to series I felt. The most embarressingly dated items were easily in The Way Back where Blake's lawyer uses that "camera" to record the massacre, and the odd handle thing the dissidents use to open the doors to get out of the dome. And then the "log" the captain of the London records in Cygnus Alpha.

this is the beauty of interpretation. i view the way back as the best dated episode of all because of the depth of development in the story line. this notwithstanding obvious evidence of small tech budget as witnessed by the shot of blake running away from guards and being brainwashed by computer shown about six different times in total.
