Again I would say that the cybermen had their good bits and bad but the 60's were whent he cybermen really were at their best. You know it was the period when the production team really cared about the cybermen. In the 70's the cybermen where pushed to the back burner because Barry Letts and Terrence Dick didn't like them. (The scene of the cybermen trapped in the carnival in the carnival of monsters.) Robert Holmes and Phillip Hinchliff etc wanted to move away from the architypical monsters. The 80's was mediocre. Earthshock was excellent! However I think that the cybermen never really where that bad. You know not as bad as various stories like Timelash* and Web Planet*. I can't wait to their debut adventure in the 21st century!

*The epsiodes here may not be consirdered bad by the author and where used as examples of what the typical doctor who fan feels are bad stories.

Has to be the 80's. You can really see the spirit of Alien in the design. Earthshock is still a classic of samall screen, low budget 'tough' SF. Sure they might have regained their emotions, but the casual sadism of David Banks Cyberleader was always fascinating to watch.

There was only one story with the cybermen in and isn't all that good either.

But are you also including five doctors in your thoughts about the cybermen? Dicks only had them killed off in the way he did because he didn't like them that much.

They look good in Five Doctors but the story doesn't have much new to do with them. Dicks was clearly much more interested in the Master (unsurprising considering the period he script edited) so the Cybertroops and the lone Dalek are just cannon fodder. Attack is a better story in its use of Cybermen - especially the idea of the partially cybernised Stratton and Bates.

Tenth Planet and The Invasion were their best outings. Afterwards, they were poo.

I've voted for the 60's as that was their heyday. They appeared in every season during the Troughton era. After that, we only saw them once during Tom Baker's "reign" and then the last three Doctors only met them just once each. (Apart from in the 5 Doctors) Of their encounters only "Earthshock" stands out as a good story.

They look good in Invasion, but they are very much second fiddle to Tobias Vaughn.
