Surely this is a bit of a no-contest? Roger by a mile, no question!

Bloody stupid question. Delgado, obviously, despite the fact that most of the Pertwee Master stories are either deadly dull (Colony in Space, Frontier in Space), vastly over-rated (Sea Devils, The Daemons) or just plain rubbish (Claws of Axos, The Time Monster).

Pratt and Beevers can't really be judged on the strength of one story alone, I refuse to count the McGann movie as canon 'cos it was so awful and Anthony Ainley's performances were so hammy they would disgrace a pantomime villain.

And the other two don't count.

Roger is the only Master.

Eric Roberts is the worst actor ever.

But I knew if I didn't include them, some bugger was bound to point it out. Jacobi was very good in Shalka anyway.

I'm torn between Delgado and Beavers. In fact, on the strength of Beavers peformance in 'Master' and 'Traken' I'd say he was the best. Delgado was very good though, much better than Pertwee in fact!

On the subject of the Roberts Master, he is less a villain and more an intelligent disease. The Movie is primarily concerned with themes of life vs death and re-birth vs decay. The Master is very much the maggot in the apple. He spews mucus on people, his body is disentegrating and his kiss infects Grace.

There's quite a Cronenbergian feel to alot of this - the bit where the Master tugs off a fingernail is very like a similar scene in the Fly and the Master-parasite's cool trick of leaping down people's throats is much closer to Shivers (great film if you haven't seen it) than Alien. I don't think it's intended as an AIDS parallel as some have suggested, but the Master in this 'incarnation' represents everything that can destroy us from within. The Doctor in his green coat (a colour of nature) represents life and (obviously) renewal.

Pertwee was just a supporting player to Delgado.

Ainley was very good in Logopolis, Castrovalva, Planet of Fire and (especially) Survival.
