Come on, everyone, what's your opinion of Cygnus Alpha? Oi! Stop booing!

I've just watched Cygnus Alpha and really enjoyed it. It is one of the weakest episodes of season one (if not the weakest), simply because it's quite silly. The concept is good but they let it down towards the end. The death of Kara is very poorly carried out (why has she suddenly fallen in love with Gan?) and the ending is so hurriedly done with Vargas teleporting on board the Liberator, ranting and raving, being teleported off again (why did he step on the teleporter pad?) and being blown up.

This could have been such a good episode if it had been more carefully scripted.

I do love Brian Blessed, though - WITH ALL HIS SHOUTING!!!!

Strange episode,it felt like it was meant to be a two parter and then was changed to a single episode.Exploring the Liberator and the happenings on Cygnus Alpha could easily have been seperate episodes. The Kara/Gan romance, the Kara/Laran rivalry,Vargasí religion, the jewels on the Liberator, could all have been developed more.

I liked Brian Blessed's performance.Sure,it was over the top,but that's what made Vargas believable.Intelligence mixed with maddness. He reminded me of John Rhys-Davies.

Without Blake and Avon around,Gan seems capable of taking charge.Too bad he turns to jelly when Blake shows up.With a little better writing this could have been a good Gan episode. He does kneel a bit too quickly though, but I'll chalk that up to the suppressants still in his system.

Avon:"Did you see anything while you were down there?"
Blake:"Not much."
Already Blake is manipulating the crew to his advantage.

Wathed this episode for the first time in ages last night and despite the fact that the priests all bear a freaky resembalence to David Bunket and the damage done to my ear drums done br Brian 'A GOD!!!' Blessed, I enjoyed it.

I think that it's very much Terry Nation's critique of religion. Faith binds the society on Cygnus Alpha together, but it is corrupt and founded on illusion. It's surely not a co-incidence that Vargas is holding a gun when he describes how his forefathers established the religion. In other words, life on the prison isn't that different life in the Dome. It's also tempting to wonder if the fake medication tablets on the metal platter are a rather damning metaphor for the Catholic communion.

In stories like Terminal we got to see Nation's bleak ideas about the inevitable decay and fall of technology. Cygnus Alpha
takes a similar view about faith.

Incidentally - a colony of high risk convicys being controlled by religion and ignored by the rest of the universe - an inspiration for Alien 3 perhaps?

This is a terrible episode -just how does life thrive on a world that seems to be in perpetual darkness ?

There are a few planets in B7 which logically shouldn't be able to support life.

The one where Norl's people are headed to in 'City' for one. 'Yes, this the barren rock will be the ideal place for us to thrive'

I don't usually nitpick every scientific detail, because stories don't have to be satuated with techno babble like Star Trek, but certain things should be obvious.Planets that don't have essentials like water or plant life, shouldn't be able to support human life. While frozen or asteroid worlds make for very colorful stories, scifi writers have an obligation to explain how humans can survive there or else it starts to become fantasy as opposed to science fiction.

Vila gets some great lines in this, mainly with Arco or Gan as a foil.

Avon uses hole reinforcing rings to mark the controls on the teleport console.

The fight scene is odd because of the mixture of filmed & videotaped footage, I guess this was down to the first series schedule going out of line.

In 'Liberation' its suggested that Gan can kill people and the limiter is actually there to inhibit violent sexual crimes against women. The book goes on to say that Gan's tale about gaurds killing his lover is a lie based on the death of the priestess in this episode.

As far as I'm concerned 'Liberation' is a load of twaddle where Gan's character is concerned.

If the limiter was there to protect women, why would it constrain him in Time Squad? There were no women involved.

According to Liberation...

He is alone on the ship with Jenna, and struggling to break free of the limiter's influence because, due to his personality disorder, he is compelled to attack a vulnerable woman.

Notice he only starts showing signs of instability when the rest of the crew leave (and it starts pretty much as soon as they leave).
