Weird caricature of punk aside...it's all made worthwhile by Avon's final line though...

I know - chilling! Although it was probably the only thing he could have done and Dr Plaxton seemed to have a death wish.

Was this when Avon became unhinged or did it start much earlier in 'Rumours' or 'Terminal'?

I think he started going off the rails when he found out in "Rumours of Death" that Anna was a Federation officer all the time and that she'd betrayed him. I dont think he ever recovered from the shock. Probably the only other person he ever trusted was Blake, so on learning that Blake had apparrently sold him out on Gauda Prime, that was the last straw.

It would explain why he killed Plaxton,(out of stress and just plan maddness!)

He killed Dr. Plaxton out of necessity - but that's exactly what makes it so chilling - he knows he's going to have to and once he's done it, he's got no room for regret.
I don't think Avon is mad or psychotic, I'm not even sure I buy unhinged or under too much stress - just pushed to the limits and with absolutely nothing left to loose.

It's true he didn't have much choice except to do what he did and to pretend otherwise would have been out of character for Avon.

The Space Rats are a nice idea in principle but the design is all wrong. It would have been better if instead of sporting mohicans and make up, they were all scarred, limbs crippled and twisted by multiple collisions and accidents. Instead of those stupid shoulder pads and green/white biker outfits, they should have been wearing wierd metalic outfits, part body shielding, part body support. And they absolutely should have had better transport than those silly bikes!!

I agree that Avon had no choice but to kill Dr Plaxton, but he didn't exactly look as if he felt much remorse about it!

Then again, I suppose she was an ex-Federation lackey who had then sided with a bunch of psychos so that she could carry on her research... she must have known they were using her stardrives to carry out piracy and murder but that didn't stop her. And she didn't seem too bothered about knowing what Avon and his group would be using her research for either...

The Space Rats could have done with being something more like the bikers in Mad Max

Or like Blake's character in the final episode. Vila had some good lines in the episode as well.

I agree the Space Rats looked all wrong, more like pantomime villains than intimidating characters, and the only good bit for me was the ending. This is one of the poorest episodes for me, an ok idea that was stretched too much and became tedious.
