The DVD features Animals the Directors Cut which improves greatly on the original by replacing every single scene expect for "Avon's slip" with the test card.

Wel, I've decided not to to explore the obvious failings of the episode and tried to find some good things to say about Animals...

1. Servalan. Whatever else you could say about him, Alan Prior always wrote well for Servalan. He gave her just the right combination of humour, sadism and seductiveness. Even the tiresome Sleer plot works quite well here with her demands to why Kevin Stoney's character thinks of the Supremme Commander showing just how dangerous her new life must be. Despite the hideous outfit they gave her to wear, Jackie Pearce gives her usual good peformance.

2. The brainwashing of Dayna. This is a far more clever subplot than its usually given credit for. The idea that 'love' can be turned on and off by the application of torture is very Orwellian and quite unsettling. In the B7 universe, even the strongest emotions can be controlled those who are ruthless enough. Jackie and Jossette plays these scenes very well. I paticularly like Dayna's reaction to the lie detector after she has claimed not to love Justin - bracing herself for pain that does not come. Servalan's line 'Yes you will' is very sinister.

3. Dayna crying at the end. When Cally's people were wiped out ib COA, the episode ended on a terrible laugh scene. Animals ends with Dayna sobbing her heart out over the corpse of the man she loves. Its nice that they felt they could end on such a downbeat note, though its diminished by the fact that Justin seemed to be shot because the episode was about to end.

4. The Dayna/Og parallel. Not many people coment on this. Justin is manipulating Og's mind, using him like a tool. He justifies this to himself by saying that it is necessary. Servalan treats the woman he loves in exactly the same way and justifies it in the same way. She regards Dayna in much the same way that Justin regards Og - an object to control. Perhaps Prior wanted to make a point about how people are sometimes regarded as no more than animals?

5. Slave. It's quite funny that when Scorpio is attacked, Slave tells Tarrant to 'try' a course of action, sounding as if he doesn't have any faith in his own judgement!

Animals is stuck with hideous costumes (what the hell is going on with Justin's tabbard thing?), a conclusion that involes Servalan killing everyone that she needs for no apparent reason, bizare lines about stimulants, an uncharismatic guest star and the woirst defended sectret bunker in history.

But its not totally without merit!

The Dayna/Og parallel is very interesting and worth more examination. I'd never considered it before, but you are right, it works! . . . resists the temptation to go afro-style on this ep, but that resistance is just a temporary solution

What you are not right about, however, is Dayna crying at the end. It's HIDEOUSLY awful. A right clanger. When Boxie and I watched this the other night, Boxie reckoned that this was thee last scene shot for the episode (or the day) and the cast and crew were dead keen to get to the pub. There's no other reason why such a take was kept in. Dayna just doesn't carry the emotion off well enough to justify a close-up. The nuances of feeling aren't there. What they should have done with this scene was to shoot the scene from a distance, with the B7 crew standing around looking up at the ship while Dayna rushes over to Justin body and cries over it. Use only the sound of Servalan's ship to accompany the scene and then the ending is much more powerful. We know what is happening, we dont need to see it up close.

I started watching this last night.

Note well I said "started".

Nevermind the faults that have been discussed about this episode.

It is simply just BORING! Except for the early Servalan scenes.

I fell asleep - which was fine because I got in a few hours before kick off for the WC final (2am here).

Poor Og!
Yeah it was a bit dull, but not that bad.
Laughed a lot at Avons slip, there wasnt nearly enough "crew" in this one for my liking!

Boring and weak but nowhere near as bad as the preceding episode, Stardrive.

Obviously an attempt at an Island of DOctor Moreau homage, Dayna is strangely out of character with her sudden regard for human life. Interestingly, though, I think it would have been even worse had it been a Jan Chappell vehicle as originally intended as yet another moralisitc Cally story would have been even more monotonous. If Cally had been in a previous romance witht he scientist how would Avon have reacted?

The ending is also illogical and weak. Why did Servalan not simpy begin to reign bombs and lasers on the Scorpio crew as they stood there or launched an immeidate attack on the ship.

Surprisingly, Og himself was somewhat sympathetic and the theme of a creature caught being treated as a fellow human by some yet as mere cattle by others is a poignant theme when one considers the atrocities of the last few centuries (as indigenous people, slaves and Jews were treated as sub-human by their oppressors) and the emerging challenges we will face as genetic research moves forward.
