B7 has so much to teach us and I think that we need an ongoing thread to record the vital lessons we can't take from the series. Please feel free to contribute!

1. Never neglect your pets

Yes Saymon, a Decima might seem cute in a novelty kind of way and it's all well and good chucking it outside to fend for itself once all the incessant squeeking gets annoying, but it's just going to end up bitter and resentful and will trash your stuff given half a chance. Similarly, owning a big hairy monster with horns might give you macho status, even if you are a slightly effecte research scientist in a silly tunic, but letting them get gunned down by any passing girl with a gun who takes your fancy is just irresponsible.

is for life, not just for Christmas. Even if you are stuck on a dull planet.

2.Clothes Matter

The B7 universe on the whole is not a happy one. Your family dies, your colony gets ravaged by a disease and then a tubby welsh man comes round to lecture you. Anyone you fancy will get killed and all anyone has to look forward to is being a Link in a few million years.

So what are you gonna do?

As B7 teaches us, the only comfort to be found lays in fashion. Huge shoulder pads, metal attachments, shiny material, outragous hats...if you know you're inevitably going to get shot in 50 minutes time, it's much better to dress up like Lady GaGa than to sit around moping about it.

The ultimate proof of this is that Avon and Jenna happily sign up to a doomed rebellion the minute that they find out that the Liberator has a fancy wardrobe and costume jewellery.

Leather and studs were never the same again after Blake's 7. I mean, Hell's Angels used to be scary then Avon came along and they just made you giggle.

Even more so, when Tarrant was forced to fitt into an old Avon leather costume

3.When it Comes to Your Career, Keep Things Simple

So you're a deposed President, guilty of genocide and state sanctioned torture. You want to be in a position of power but stay alive. So what do you do? Come up with an ingenious, machievellian plan? No. You knock a few letters off your name and wear different frocks. All your enemies end up dead and things work out fine for you.

If Gordon Brown had changed his name to Gobro and worn a boa from the moment he got elected, he'd be the most popular Prime Minister since Churchil.

I don't want to think about him dealing with political rivals with the snogging-then-icicle technique

I'm enjoying this topic Roachy.

Its a bit like the 'Everything I know I learned from Star Wars' poster that HMV were selling a while back. Except that was just quotes and Roachy beautifully explains each point.

2 Clothes matter is my favourite .....so far....

Looking forward to the next nugget of wisdom.

Maybe that's his plan if he loses the general election

4. Don't hanker after your exes

Sometimes it's just over. It's hard to let go and move on but it's important to move forward. Don't go off to some desolate planet full of animated sand on the off chance that your first crush is gonna fancy you now you're all grown up. Don't get distracted from your inexplicable but fufilling hobby of making horned monsters by a pretty young thing with a gun, especially not if you used to give her long division homework a few years ago. Most important of all, if they betrayed you during a bank job then they betrayed you during a bank job and no amount of self delusion is going to change it. It'll all end in tears.

Get yourself out there. There's plenty more Phibians in the sea.
