Now according to most dictionaries ‘A sight for sore eyes’ is a welcome sight. Maybe you’ve heard this song (which seems to confirm it) by M-People called ‘Sight for sore eyes’

„...my eyes are aching my body's tired
I'm all strung out you know I feel so wired
And then you walk into the room
time stops everything drops boom boom boom
visions of love heaven's above
I feel your body like a velvet glove
Because you're a sight for sore eyes ...“

Well here it always means the opposite; it means you look bad. Long may such language differences survive and cause misunderstandings!

Where is 'here' Ron? Sight for sore eyes is always good as far as I'm aware.

Hmm, that's odd. The original meaning of the phrase is definitely positive -a welcome sight to sooth sore eyes. What is your understanding of the context then?

Also curious to know how the rest of you understand this phrase?

Here sight for sore eyes means when you look your worst,
But actually it could have both meanings, it depends on the situation
