Did Orac acctually care if the others lived or died? Did he respect them in anyway? Were theyall just lab rats to him?

Fairly concise answers so far...

Well, my first thoughts were that in "Dawn of the Gods", he seemed happy to get the crew sucked into a black hole just so that he could satisfy his own curiosity! Or maybe that entity that possessed him in "Shadow" had left some lingering impression...?

But on the other hand, in "Headhunter" he seemed quite determined to stop the Muller android from taking him over and enslaving humanity...

I'm not sure if that counts as "caring" tho... Orac himself might point out (somewhat petulantly) that he was incapable of such feelings as "caring" or "respect", and merely acts according to his programming.....

Self interest - he wanted to be hid remember...

Actually, a more interesting question might be did Avon care if the others lived?

Well, switched off Muller couldn't detect Orac! So hiding him was I suppose the next best think! Unless Muller was prepared to check every conceivable hiding place inorder to locate it! This Muller couldn't or wasn't prepared to do given the crew were still running around the base;Muller therefore went for an easier option and picked up their body heat in the hope that they would lead him too Orac's location, which they did.

Given Muller didn't have an head though; How did he actually 'see' ? Could he detect/see Orac even if the it were switched off!!

Maybe he just wanted to play a game of Hide an seek with Muller

i dont think he cared either way...he is after all just a computer
however he probably would care if he thought the others destruction would result in his own!

It seems to me that Orac had been in that situation a few times and it didn't change his apathy.

If I really get right down to it, and eschew all anthropomorhism surrounding the Orac character, I have to say that Orac did not, and could not have, cared one bit (he hee, pun alert) about the crew. In my weaker moments however, I like to entertain the idea of Orac having a sneaking, begrudging, respect for Avon.

I think he probably had the measure of Avon more than most? He certainly knows how to get under his skin in Headhunter.

That's the episode I was thinking of. Especially with that sarcastic "Yes, Master" at the end.

What an intresting question...

I think the reason why Orac didn't want to be found by the Muller android was that it (funny how we think of it as a HE?) was simply because it knew that it would become it's subserviant. Orac was always "lazy" (Think of the episode Trator when rather than do the modification work Avon assigned it... it passed it on to enginering computers on Helotrix because it concidered the work benith it's capacities and unintresting interlectually speecking) Concected to the android it would lose it's "independance" . It only "respected Avon... because it depended on him for nessacary repairs.
