Hard to say - we've only ever seen the Rutans in one story. The fact that the Sontarans have so far failed to beat them suggests the Sontarans may not be the stronger side.

The Rutans shape shifting ability must stand them in good stead. Maybe they created the coronic acid that is used against the Sontarans in The Two Doctors.

The only time that the two races appeared together (that I know of) was in a low budget film by Reeltime called 'Shakedown'. From that, it seems the Rurans have the edge. Funnily enough, Brian Croucher was in that playing a space millionaire!!

I'd like to see the Sontarans in the new series. I love all the classic Sontaran stories, especially Invasion of Time - 'Dock-Totrr!'
