Well considering what it probably cost the organisers to have JR attend in the first place...I suspect they budgeted on at least 10 people being willing to pay the £65 to get their money back...just a wild guess but when you do the math...and considering how many people attended over the whole weekend...higher numbers encouraged by the low gate price of course.

Having had a modicum of experience in convention organising, you're faced with a choice, either go all inclusive with no additional fees once the event is underway, which we did, or go down the route of GSintG.

However I'm in complete agreement that that method is very off-putting for some. I for one didn't invest, but then I'm not a die hard fan.

Also Paul was there as a BF guest, hence the no autograph fee, only a BF purchase was required...a much fairer deal in my book.

I was hoping you would do a more in depth review of the new B7 audio adventures, Steve, especially the Zen story. I found Escape Velocity to be pretty good, no not original B7 kind of good but enjoyable as a stand alone kind of prequel. It slightly explores what was touched upon in Space Fall that there's something out there more powerful than the Federation and the System. Also, I got a chill when Zen says "Have you betrayed us? Have you betrayed me?", so naturally I had to rewatach Blake a few times to hear the original lines spoken.

Same here . It wasn't as bad as some make it out to be. The script was obviously intended for & not . There are worse episodes to be had earlier in the series in my opinion
He lost his hold on reality? That's going a bit far. He wasn't delusional. He could think, plan, and hold conversations like a sane person. He did, though, have some intolerable feelings going on that affected his decisions eventually.

I never believed that Avon lost it, either.

What most people these days seem not to understand is that there's an enormous, murky, grey area between being mentally "healthy" (whatever that really means, if anything), and being out-and-out disturbed. For the most part, most of us exist somewhere in that grey area. Did Avon "lose it", in the way people use that expression these days? Yes. Did he lose his mind? No.

He stays a generally rational man, whose rationality is increasingly under pressure from one or more life traumas or irreconcilable conflicts. Part of his response is to isolate himself, cutting off any possible escape routes. I don't know if the others on Liberator/Scorpio could have been of help, but his personal dignity wouldn't have allowed him to try to include them or confide in them. Maybe for good reason.

So the pressure gets to him more and more. No, he's not crazy. But he is trapped in a bad mental place. I don't know quite what that mental place is, but it might be a fairly rational and well-reasoned place. I mean, one can be traumatized and be damaged, and made cynical, without its being because of a skewed psychological attitude. His growing cynicism might be justified. After all, the B7 universe is a pretty crappy one to try to live in. His day-to-day practical judgment is definitely suffering, though.

I agree that Avon was under increasing pressure and I believe this affected his decisions and mental state. But the expression "lost it" implies that he flipped or lost his hold on reality. So maybe the name of the poll is wrong or could be better worded.
I always imagined my order would reflect the number of misfiring episodes that made up the season - demonstrated by season 2 being last. But season 1 doesn't have that many misfiring episodes. There is more to it than that. Season one is, for me, not as 'vibrant', for want of a better word, as seasons 3 and 4.

I totally agree with your order and your comments!! I am a massive fan of all the seasons, but three has the most excitement for me and four the most episodes I want to rewatch. Two the most episodes to avoid. One is awesome, just because it is.

Taken from Horizon, instructions on how to vote more than once! Vote Blake's 7!! Vote Blake's 7!!

I said it was possible to vote if you had more than one computer and the reply was below:

Not quite. That would mean that (for instance) on an internet cafe or otherwise shared computer, only the first person who used that computer = IP addr to vote, could vote. Not fair to anyone else who uses that shared computer.

A simple experiment shows that it's not unique IP addr the polling software is tracking, it's a browser cookie that prevents re-voting.
So if you can clear that browser cookie, you can vote multiple times.
(You might not want to clear all *your* browser cookies!)

Empirical data using a test/spare account : start firefox, Edit->Preferences
Somewhere under Privacy will be an option (depending on firefox version) to either clear all current history, or Show cookies with an option to Remove All Cookies. Do that, reload the RadioTimes Poll page, vote again, & the count will have risen by one.
Rinse & repeat. I added 10, moving Blake's 7 above The West Wing to be #3 (now 158 votes).

Don't know how to do that using other browsers.
So make a test/spare account & vote vote vote for Blake's 7!

I can tell Avon is your favourite character alright

Sadly, I have to admit that this advice is not my technical expertise, but someone else's. But you're right of course. Avon is my FAVOURITE character my far and I drool over him daily.

It's nice to see the 78 is alive and well:

About The 78 Project
The 78 Project is a documentary and recording journey inspired by Alan Lomax and his quest to capture music where it lived throughout the early 20th century. Our project brings the spirit of his work into the present as we pair breakthrough musicians with the songs and the fascinating recording technology of the past. With just one microphone, one authentic 1930′s PRESTO direct-to-disc recorder, and one blank lacquer disk, musicians are given the opportunity to make a recording anywhere they choose. What we have found is that the film, music and feelings that result defy space and time, living music inspired by ghosts.
I might get some of these, if I can!

It seemed like a good idea, handled very strangely. The crew seems to have it proven to them more than once that Blake's being controlled, then they go back to acting unsure, and end up going along with him. The whole plan has holes in it, but in the end, they just shrug and get on with it.

Perhaps that was the point. Maybe the idea behind this story was how easily seemingly capable people can be drawn into bad, disastrous plans, bit by bit, without realizing it until it's too late. That seems to be one theme we see in one form or another, throughout B7.

Part of it might be that however temporary and unimportant these Fed politicians might be to the viewer, who knows they'll be gone next week, in B7 they're powerful, well-known figures. Maybe that influenced even Avon to shut up about his concerns.

If Avon and Jenna over-rode Blake it might have completely alienated a crucial ally, I guess, since only Blake and his reputation seemed to matter to the politicians.

Yes, the indigo dress is very nice, and what I think of as the leather flight-suit is of course amazing, even though I hope it's some futuristic leather substitute... (though in B7's harsher future, who'd bother?) and the lapels somehow seem too present-day.

As for that backdrop on the surface of the asteroid, that's definitely the worst "effect" ever. It's so incredible, literally, that for some time I thought it couldn't possibly really have been meant to show the asteroid's surface. Maybe it's a painting someone did on the wall of the building, I thought. The painting's as bad as having the Liberator bouncing along on the end of a very visible string in a fan parody...

I don't think we have any genuinely bad episodes till early in s3, though. There are still ideas at work here, that bad plot points don't ruin. Episodes like this one are very flawed gems.
